Chemical Peels

A chemical peel can help create a solution to smooth your skin by removing damaged, outer layers.  While most people use chemical peels on their face, they can be used on any area of the body including the neck and hands. One of the main benefits of a chemical peel is that it is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Chemical peels are great for improving scars, acne, freckles, sun damage, skin texture and tone, fine lines and wrinkles.

SAHA Med Spa offers three types of Chemical Peels:

  • Glycolic Chemical Peel

  • Salicylic Acid Chemical Peel

  • Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Chemical Peel

The Process

Chemical Peel

  • A salicylic acid chemical peel is a type of superficial peel that uses salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), to exfoliate the skin. This peel is particularly effective for treating acne and oily skin due to its oil-soluble nature, which allows it to penetrate and unclog pores.

    Benefits:

    • Exfoliation: Removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin.

    • Treats Acne: Penetrates and unclogs pores, reducing acne breakouts and blackheads.

    • Reduces Oiliness: Helps control excess oil production.

    • Improves Skin Texture: Smooths rough skin and enhances overall texture.

    • Brightens Skin: Can help improve uneven skin tone and pigmentation.

    • Anti-Inflammatory: Has anti-inflammatory properties, making it suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

    Procedure:

    1. Consultation: A skincare professional assesses your skin type and concerns to determine the appropriate concentration of salicylic acid.

    2. Preparation: Skin may need pre-treatment with certain products (e.g., cleansers or exfoliants) to enhance results.

    3. Cleansing: The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove oil, makeup, and impurities.

    4. Application: Salicylic acid solution is applied to the skin using a brush, cotton pad, or gauze. The solution may cause a tingling or stinging sensation.

    5. Neutralization: After a specific duration, the peel is usually neutralized with a special solution or water.

    6. Post-Treatment Care: A soothing moisturizer and sunscreen are applied to protect and hydrate the skin.

    Aftercare:

    • Moisturize: Use gentle, hydrating products to keep the skin moisturized.

    • Sun Protection: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily to protect against UV damage.

    • Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using harsh skincare products, exfoliants, or treatments that may irritate the skin until it fully recovers.

    • Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild cleanser to avoid over-drying the skin.

    Side Effects:

    • Redness and Irritation: Mild redness and irritation are common but usually subside within a few hours to a day.

    • Peeling and Flaking: Light peeling and flaking may occur as the skin sheds dead cells.

    • Sensitivity: The skin may be more sensitive to sunlight and certain skincare products for a few days after the peel.

    Ideal Candidates:

Particularly effective for oily and acne-prone skin, but can be used on most skin types. Effective for individuals with acne, oily skin, blackheads, and uneven texture.

  • A glycolic chemical peel is a type of superficial chemical peel that uses glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane. This peel is popular for its ability to exfoliate the skin, improve texture, and address various skin concerns with minimal downtime.

    Benefits:

    • Exfoliation: Removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin.

    • Improves Skin Texture: Smooths rough patches and enhances overall skin texture.

    • Brightens Skin: Reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and sun damage.

    • Minimizes Fine Lines: Helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    • Acne Treatment: Can help unclog pores, reduce acne breakouts, and improve the appearance of acne scars.

    • Promotes Collagen Production: Stimulates collagen synthesis, which helps maintain skin elasticity and firmness.

    Procedure:

    1. Consultation: A skincare professional evaluates your skin type and concerns to determine the appropriate concentration of glycolic acid.

    2. Preparation: Skin may need pre-treatment with certain products (e.g., retinoids or AHAs) to enhance results.

    3. Cleansing: The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup, oil, and impurities.

    4. Application: Glycolic acid solution is applied to the skin using a brush, cotton pad, or gauze. The duration depends on the acid concentration and the desired depth of the peel.

    5. Neutralization: The peel is neutralized with a special solution or water to stop the acid's action.

Suitable for most skin types, especially those with normal to oily skin. Effective for individuals with mild to moderate skin concerns such as uneven texture, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and acne.

  • A TCA (trichloroacetic acid) chemical peel is a type of medium-depth peel that uses trichloroacetic acid to exfoliate the skin. TCA peels are effective for treating more significant skin concerns than superficial peels, such as glycolic peels, and can produce more dramatic results.

    Benefits:

    • Exfoliation: Removes the outer and middle layers of the skin.

    • Improves Skin Texture: Smooths rough skin and enhances overall texture.

    • Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Particularly effective for fine lines around the eyes and mouth.

    • Treats Hyperpigmentation: Fades sun spots, age spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation.

    • Acne Scars: Reduces the appearance of superficial acne scars.

    • Skin Rejuvenation: Promotes a more youthful and radiant appearance by stimulating collagen production.

    Procedure:

    1. Consultation: A thorough assessment by a dermatologist or skincare professional to determine suitability and appropriate concentration.

    2. Preparation: Pre-treatment skincare regimen may be recommended to prepare the skin.

    3. Cleansing: The skin is cleansed to remove oil, makeup, and impurities.

    4. Application: TCA solution is applied to the skin using a brush, cotton pad, or gauze. It may cause a stinging or burning sensation.

    5. Neutralization: TCA peels typically do not require neutralization; the acid neutralizes itself over time.

    6. Post-Treatment Care: Application of soothing ointments, moisturizers, and sunscreen.

    • Downtime: Generally involves about a week of downtime, during which the skin peels and regenerates. Skin may be red and flaky during the healing process.

    Ideal Candidates:

Suitable for most skin types, but individuals with darker skin tones may be at higher risk for pigmentation changes. Effective for individuals with moderate to severe skin concerns such as deeper wrinkles, significant hyperpigmentation, and acne scars.
